Early Leicestershire Senior Leagues

Before the current Leicestershire Senior League was established in 1903 there were a number of false starts with regards to setting up a county wide senior league.

The first county league in Leicestershire ran for just one season, 1890/91, called the Leicestershire Football League it consisted of the following 8 teams, Coalville Town, Gresley Rovers, Hugglescote Robin Hoods, Leicester Teachers, Melton Rovers, Shepshed Town, South Wigston & Syston Wreake Valley.

After a gap of three seasons another league was formed, this time including teams from Northamptonshire and called the Leicestershire & Northamptonshire Football League.

After the 1895/96 season the six out of the nine teams resigned from the league due to the time and expense of travelling to the other county and the league was disbanded.

The Leicestershire based teams (Coalville Town, Hinckley Town, Hugglescote Robin Hoods, Leicester Fosse Rovers, Loughborough Athletic & Shepshed Town) were joined by teams from the recently formed Junior Leagues that had started in the 1895/96 season (Coalville Albion & Whitwick Town from the North Leicestershire League, Barwell Swifts & Earl Shilton Town from the Hinckley & District League and Ibstock Albion from the Ashby & District League). Together they formed the first Leicestershire Senior League.

At the end of the 1900/01 season there were only five teams left in the league. With Whitwick White Cross moving to the Midland Counties League for the next season the other teams moved to local junior leagues and there would be no county senior league in Leiecestershire for two years until the current Leicestershire Senior League was formed at the start of the 1903/04 season.
